Officer Francis J. McElroy was born in Providence on August 4, 1893, and was appointed to the CPD in 1929. Officer “Mac” was known for his humorous wit. He passed away in his sleep at his home on Cedar Street on June 19, 1956. He was still on the police department at the time of his death, and was the possessor of badge #1. He was a WWI navy veteran, and member of the Cranston Fraternal Order of Police. He’s buried in St. Ann’s Cemetery.
Sergeant William H. Maher – Cranston Police

Sgt. William Henry Maher was appointed a police constable in 1908, and latter appointed a permanent member of the force. He was promoted to sergeant in 1922. He passed away at his home on Franklin Street on December 11, 1924 after a brief illness. He was 41. He was survived by his wife and three children. He’s buried in St. Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket, R.I.
